Earliest History of Mother’s Day
Mother’s Day is a holiday honoring motherhood. This can include mothers, aunts and grandmothers or any Mother figure. You know what Mother’s day is all about but do you know the history of this special occasion?
You might find these parts of history interesting as I did, and I hope you will.
The first Mothers Day was started by a woman name Anna Jarvis. She helped make this official in 1914 when her mother passed away, Anna
wanted a way to honor mothers. She started “work clubs” to teach local women how to properly care for their children. These clubs later became a unifying force in a region was divided by the Civil War.
Anna also organized “Mother’s Friendship Day” groups in 1968 as was a way for local mothers to come and gather with former Union and Confederate soldiers to promote peace and reconciliation.
Jarvis who remained unmarried and childless resolved to see her holiday on the National Calendar. In 1914 President Woodrow Wilson signed the measure officially establishing the second Sunday in May as “Mother’s Day”
While versions of Mother’s Day are celebrated throughout the world, traditions vary on the Country.
In Ethiopia, families gather each Fall to sing songs and eat a large feast as part of Antrosht, sharing the day to celebrate and honor motherhood.
In Thailand, Mothers Day is always celebrated on the birthday of the current Queen.
In the United States, Mother’s Day is celebrated by mothers and other women by giving gifts and flowers.
Politically, Mother’s Day was also a date launching political or feminist causes.
In 1968, Coretta Scott King , wife of Martin Luther King Jr. used this day to host a march in support of underprivileged women and children.
In 1970 women’s groups also used this holiday to highlight the need for equal rights and childcare access.
Today, the Festival of Mother’s Day is celebrated in 46 countries (though on different dates) The second Sunday in May. Milliions of people across the Globe honoring mothers, mother figures and thanking them for giving them life, raising them, being a constant supporter and loving them.
